Jon Rahm, the current world number 2 and Spanish golf’s biggest superstar, will be bidding to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Seve Ballesteros by equalling his victory haul at the tournament. The Spaniard has confirmed another appearance at the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid, which takes place at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 6 to 9 October.
The Basque player now has his sights set firmly on title number 3 as he attempts to add to his victories in Madrid in 2018 and 2019 – the Cantabrian genius won his trio of Open de España trophies in 1981, 1985 and 1995.
Having seen off the competition in 2018 at the Centro Nacional de Golf and then finished atop the leaderboard a year later at the nearby Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, Jon Rahm will be back at the famous Javier Arana designed Madrid course, intent on also equalling the achievements of Angel de la Torre in 1916, 1917 and 1919, an era when golf was radically different to the game we know today.
Later, during the four years from 1946 to 1949, Marcelino Morcillo won the Open de España trophy consecutively, although in 1947 amateur player Mario Gonzalez posted a lower score than the professional Morcillo.
In turn, Rahm has plenty of other records within his reach, one of them he established himself in 2019, when his 22 under par equalled the lowest winning score at an Open de España, recorded by Kenneth Ferrie at the 2003 edition, which he won in a playoff with Peter Hedblom and Peter Lawrie.
Jon Rahm’s presence is a huge boost for this DP World Tour event and he will spearhead a sizeable group of home players in their quest to succeed Canary Islander Rafael Cabrera-Bello, last year’s champion, to the throne.
A stellar career
Born in Barrika (Vizcaya) on 10 November 1994, Jon Rahm is returning to a city that he is more than familiar with having been a member of the Escuela Nacional Blume de Golfe in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, when he was enjoying a hugely successful amateur career.
Since turning professional in July 2016, Rahm has enjoyed a meteoric rise, accumulating an astonishing title haul at an incredible pace, winning the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour in 2017, a season in which he would also claim victories at the Irish Open and the DP World Tour Championship, both European Tour tournaments.
Subsequently, in 2018, Jon Rahm won on both sides of the Atlantic once again, in the CareerBuilder Challenge and the Hero World Challenge on the PGA Tour and at the above-mentioned Open de España in Europe, as well as contributing to Europe’s Ryder Cup victory.
2019 brought another four victories; the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic , the Irish Open, the Open de España and the DP World Tour Championship on the ET. With 2020, the year of the pandemic, came 2 more titles – The Memorial Tournament and the BMW Championship, both in the USA –, all of this before adorning his already-stunning CV with one of the biggest titles in the game, the 2021 US Open, where he became the first Spaniard to win that major.
His stunning list of victories also includes the recent Mexico Open, a title he won in early May 2022. His charisma and communication skills also contribute to the magic that surrounds Jon Rahm, making him an idol for so many golf fans around the world.
