Today was Jon Rahm’s second practice day at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. While the Barrika native played the back nine of Javier Arana’s Black Course yesterday, on Tuesday he teed it up on the front and completed his round.
Over these two days we have witnessed a Rahm who is clearly still riding a wave of confidence from the Ryder Cup, hitting great shots, and reacquainting himself with Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, which is in spectacular condition, as ever. He has already more than proven that the course fits his game like a glove.
On both days, there were changes for the Spaniard to discover compared to last year’s layout. Yesterday, Jon was happy to see that the tee on hole 12 will be moved back by 20 yards at the weekend, and today he got his first look of the new tee box on the 5th, also 20 yards further back. This innovation means that the fairway bunkers now come into play off the tee, although today’s warm conditions meant that Jon was still able to fly them. We will see what happens under the gun.
Finally, it is worth noting that while yesterday Rahm went out on his own, today he played in the company of his good friend Alfredo García Heredia and amateur Ángel Ayora, for whom playing nine holes with Rahm was a dream come true. The Andalusian looked to enjoy his round and the world number three was surely impressed with his distance and accuracy off the tee. Tomorrow, Rahm will have a chance to put the final touches on his game in the exclusive Pro-Am that takes place on the eve of the competition.
