Jon Rahm, the world number two, will be defending his title at the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid, which will take place at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 12 to 15 October.
A three-time Open de España champion (2018, 2019 and 2022), it will be the first time Rahm plays in Spain since winning The Masters in April, the second major of his career after the 2021 US Open. Having equalled Severiano Ballesteros’ total of three Open de España titles, giving him one of the biggest trophy hauls in the modern history of the event, Rahm will this year be looking to take a step closer to Ángel de la Torre, who holds the record at the tournament with 5 wins (from 1916 to 1925).
“I’m very happy to be back in Madrid for the ACCIONA Open de España this October,” said Rahm. “It’s always incredible to play in front of your home crowd and I’m excited to defend my title at Club de Campo. To equal Seve’s record of wins at this tournament was truly special to me and I hope to put on a great show for the fans in a few months’ time.”
In 2022, Rahm was crowned champion with the lowest score in the history of the Open de España: 259 shots (-25). Matthieu Pavon (265, -19) and Min Woo Lee (266, -18) completed the podium. Once again, Rahm’s presence will prove a huge attraction for fans, who will be able to enjoy the Basque golfer’s boundless talents at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid during another Open de España just two weeks after what will likely be his third appearance at the Ryder Cup.
So far in 2023, Rahm has won four titles: the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The American Express, the Genesis Invitational and the US Masters. In October, Rahm will be bidding to add yet another Open de España title to his impressive resumé.
The 2023 ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid will also offer a prize fund of $3.25 million, a significant increase from the €1.75 million on offer in 2022, after 43,211 spectators over four days of competition witnessed Rahm’s victory on Sunday afternoon in the Spanish capital.
